I was staring at the screen, watching AI write code for a project that used to require three developers. As the head of a custom software development company, I felt both excitement and threat. “What am I supposed to do now?”
It was not the first time I faced a radical change in my life and I know how hard it can be when you don’t know how to handle it. The challenges I faced allowed me to create a 3-step framework that helped me transform fear into action and uncertainty into opportunities. And that’s something I want to share with you here.
Before we dive in, let’s take a look at these global changes from a wider perspective:
Technology has always reshaped the economy, driving major revolutions. Humans lived as hunter-gatherers for millennia before the Agricultural Revolution. Over 11,000 years, cities, writing, trade, and science led to the Industrial Revolution. Just 210 years later came the Digital Revolution, followed by the AI Revolution only 40 years after that.
Change is accelerating, and with its speed comes our discomfort.
So, what’s next? How do we not just survive but thrive in this new era?
It all starts with three simple steps.
Accept change and assess yourself
Resisting change won’t help. We need a new plan and to create it, we must first explore what’s possible in this new environment and where we stand. We need to realize what our ultimate strong sides are and act based on them.
As Peter Druker – a father of modern management said in his book Effective Executive: “A person can perform only from strength. Focusing on strength is development, whereas focusing on weakness is damage control”.
Here are several questions about how you can start self-assessment:
- What skills, values, and passions do I have?
- What are my strong sides - professionally and personally?
- Where do I find fulfillment in this new landscape?
Still unsure? Here is a quick exercise that helped me.
Create a Google Form and send it to close friends or colleagues with these three questions:
- What are my 3 strongest qualities?
- What are 3 areas I could improve?
- How would you describe me in one sentence?
Sometimes, seeing ourselves through the eyes of the people who know us the best can help validate our thoughts and show us opportunities we can pursue.
Visualize your future
The vision of your desired future starts a powerful engine inside you that allows you to move forward.
The father of logotherapy, Victor Frankl, in his book “Man’s Search for Meaning,” described how visualization helped him survive in Nazi concentration camps. He used to imagine himself standing in a classroom in front of hundreds of students, giving lectures about his experience.
And that vision gave him a reason to endure.
Imagine it’s five years from now. What does your perfect day look like? Where do you live? What do you do? Who are the people around you?
Sometimes when you feel lost, it is hard to imagine the desired future, so retrospective on the past can help. What is one dream or aspiration you’ve always wanted to pursue?
What’s one thing you’d be most proud to celebrate in 5 years?
Build systems to reach the desired future
Having a vision is powerful, but as James Clear said in his book “Atomic Habits”: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems”.
What are the systems?
Systems are the processes and daily routines that lead you to desired outcomes.
I used to set some ambitious New Year resolutions. By year’s end, most of my goals were unachieved. I had to sit down and ask myself Why? What was wrong with my approach?
Next year, I decided to focus on the things I could have done to improve my chances of achieving those goals. For example, instead of setting my revenue targets, I looked at my lead funnel, figured out what numbers should be improved, and implemented changes in our processes to improve those numbers.
So, the lesson was – instead of concentrating on the result and expecting the world to do magic for you, you focus on What you need to do and How can you improve.
This is how it would look like:
To help you understand this process better, I want to use the following example.
James Clear explains that goals have three layers:
- Identity: Who do you want to become? (e.g., "I want to be a creator.")
- Processes: What habits and systems in my life support that identity? (e.g., I write 1.5 hours daily)
- Outcomes: What results will those habits yield? (e.g., 1 weekly newsletter, 5 social posts in a week)
What have I done to improve? How have I changed my habits?
- I started working out six days a week to stay healthy and fit.
- I started coding daily to build successful IT products.
- I started writing every day to make sure I create a community of like-minded people. And whether I’m good or bad at it right now, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that with time, I know I will improve and my results will be better.
Now, ask yourself:
- What habits will make me the person I want to become?
- How does that person that I want to be think, act, and make decisions?
It is crucial to think not only about what to do but also how to do it.
You don’t want to just do things, you want to do things that work and lead to the result.
For example, if you want to become a successful creator, the questions are:
- How do successful creators pick topics?
- How do they build and engage their audience?
- What are their principles, systems, and tools when they create?
As you adopt new habits, you’ll see results. Those results build confidence. Step by step, your identity will shift, and your systems will evolve to achieve outcomes faster.
The AI revolution brings uncertainty, but it also opens doors to those ready to act. The key is to transform fear into forward motion—by accepting change, visualizing your future, and building systems that carry you there.
Navigating change isn’t easy. But you can turn uncertainty into opportunity with the right mindset and systems.
